How to Build a Great Wardrobe with Just the Essentials

You don’t need a bursting-at-the-seams wardrobe to kill the style game. If you’re like most Americans, you probably don’t even wear half of what’s in your closet. We’ve put together a list of essentials that will help anyone looking to spruce up their closet or build a perfect capsule wardrobe from scratch.

Shirts and Blouses: You don’t need a t-shirt and tank in every color of the rainbow. Inexpensive T-shirts wear too quickly and are often badly (and unethically) made, and white t-shirts are a sweat-stain magnet. T-shirts made in durable fabrics that fit well are the exception, but it’s better to invest in shirts and blouses which can be dressed up or down.

Two Pairs of Jeans: Have one pair hemmed to wear with flat shoes and the other with a longer leg to wear with heels. Buy a pair that has a fair amount of stretch and fits you well.

The Right Bra: Fashion-experts agree that a high-quality bra makes a big difference to your outfit. Women with bigger bust sizes should focus on fit, support, and overall comfort. Unless you’re sure of your size, don’t buy bras online.

Black Pants: Black pants are versatile and wear well. A well-tailored pair of tropical-wool pants will go far and can take you from the office to a party in no time.

Jacket: A dressy jacket can elevate even a simple outfit. Make sure the jacket fits well at the widest part of your body. Sleeves should just graze your wrist. Pay attention to details like buttons, hems, the lining, and how wrinkle-free the material is.

Dresses: Two good-quality dresses can last years and can be dressed up or down with accessories like scarves and jewelry. Dark or jewel-toned dresses are timeless and work well for the office and social events.

A Power Suit: A well-cut power suit in a luxurious fabric boosts your confidence at meetings, interviews, and presentations and should be a part of your wardrobe.

Shoes: Invest in good-quality shoes for work because you’re going to be in those things all day. Choose a heel height you’re comfortable with, soft breathable leather, and classic styles that boast top craftsmanship.
